White Pass & Yukon Route & Klondike Gold Rush
The Klondike Gold Rush was 1896-1899. The gold seekers arrived in Dyea or Skagway and then walked either the Chilkoot or the White Pass trails to the Yukon River and sailed further to Dawson and the Klondike. Quite soon it was proposed to build a railway to connect Skagway with the Yukon River. The White Pass & Yukon Route was finished to Whitehorse in 1900, but at that time the gold rush had ceased and larger scale mining of copper, silver and lead took over. For a long time the railway was the only means of transport, but in 1982 falling ore prices and competition from the roads finally led to the closure of the railway. But already in 1988 the White Pass & Yukon Route was opened again, now for cruise ship passengers. This led to a steadily increasing amount of passengers and in the last years the railway has invested much in new rolling stock, built as replicas from the old locomotives and carriages, which also still are in service.
